Ep.64 – Psychotherapy

It is a psychological method to manage stress (talking therapy)

Types of therapies

  • Cognitive behaviour therapy – working forwards
  • Psychodynamics therapy – working backwards
  • Interpersonal Psychotherapy
  • Mindfulness – breathing exercises
  • Motivational Interviewing 
  • Supportive psychotherapy – assist patients to get where they need to go
  • Acceptance and Commitment therapy – for people stuck in certain life events or choric pain
  • Marital therapy
  • Eclectic therapy

Duration

Depends on individual issues:

  • CBT – 12 sessions
  • Psychodynamics – 20-40 sessions

Patients must be committed.  Once a week is common.

Requirements to be a psychotherapist:

Either:

  • Clinical psychologist with psychotherapy training
  • Psychiatrist 
  • Workshop with motivational interviewer
